How is planning a visit to Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure in California different from planning a visit to Disney World in Florida?
Earlier this year I wrote about a simplified way to plan your ideal experience at Disney World in Florida. Now, I would like to focus on how planning a visit to the Disney theme parks in California, Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, is different from planning a trip to the Disney World theme parks in Florida.
Some people will say Disneyland is the best Disney park because it is the original, the first Disney park, while others will say Magic Kingdom at Disney World is the best because it is a part a larger designated vacation area focused entirely on Disney. Wherever you stand in the “which is better” opinions and especially if you are a fan of Disney, it is worth experiencing both the Disney theme parks in Florida and the Disney theme parks in California.
If you are already familiar with Disney World in Florida, you will be relieved to know that the Disney theme parks in California, in my opinion, are easier to navigate and can be experienced in a shorter amount of vacation time.
Unlike the Disney resorts in Disney World in Florida, the Disney resorts in California currently do not offer worthwhile perks for those staying on there. They used to offer those staying at the Disney resorts in California early entry to the Disney California theme parks, but recently they have removed this offer and have replaced it with a single Lightning Lane pass for a theme park ride.
Because Disney theme parks in California are located within the city of Anaheim, you can avoid paying the Disney garage, per vehicle, per day parking fee of $40 by staying at a nearby non Disney hotel within walking distance that includes parking.
At Disney World in Florida some may argue against paying for the park hopper addition because the transportation between the Disney theme parks in Florida can be slow and takes too much time away from time spent in the parks. In California however, Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure have their entrance gates literally right across from one another. This makes Park Hopping very easy to do at the California Disney theme park locations.
Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Lightning Lane Premier Pass, and Lightning Lane Single Passes are also available for purchase at Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure. The main differences between lightning lane passes in Disney World and those available at the Disney Parks in California, is that you can only select one attraction at a time and fewer attractions are available with Lightning Lanes in California. In Florida you can select three attractions at a time. The Lightning Lane Premier Pass can be used with a park hopper at both California Disney Theme Parks. This is different from Lightning Lane Premier Passes and park hopper in Disney World in Florida. In Florida, you cannot use a Premier pass with the park hopper addition. In Florida, you need to purchase a lightning lane Premier pass for each park that you plan to visit with a park hopper. The Lightning Lane Multi Pass can be used with park hopper in both the Disney Theme Parks in California and at all of the Disney World Theme Parks in Florida.
Do I need to purchase the Lightning Lane passes for Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure?
Not necessarily. While purchasing the Lightning Lane passes in Florida can really help to navigate around the high crowds and help you make the most of your time at the parks, it is not as essential to purchase while at the Disney parks in California. If you are visiting during a slower time, the wait times will be low enough especially if you only focus on one park at a time without park hopper. If you are visiting when it is busier and planning to visit both parks in a day, Lightning Lane passes can help.
We decided not to include Lightning Lanes on our most recent visit. In Disneyland, on a one park and one day ticket without the Lightning Lanes we were able to ride all of the major rides and more with some repeats within the one day time frame. We specifically chose to visit Disneyland on a lower price and a lower expected crowd day and therefore we didn’t see major rides with wait times much above 30 minutes and some rides were even walk-on. The mornings were especially nice at Disneyland with low crowds and low wait times. If the Radiator Springs Racers ride in California Adventure had been open at the time of our visits and if we had added a park hopper, we would have considered the Lightning Lane Multi Pass more seriously, but since it wasn’t open we had a good experience at Disneyland without Lightning Lane.
Disneyland is open later and has longer park operating hours year round than the Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Florida. Most nights you can stay as late as 11pm or 12am in Disneyland. The Star Wars Rise of the Resistance ride in Disneyland does close earlier than the rest of Disneyland each night, around 10pm, so you are not able to close the park by riding on this ride.
Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure currently offer free downloads on the Disneyland App for the four rides that take attraction photos while riding them:
At Disneyland – Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Space Mountain and
at Disney’s California Adventure – Incredicoaster and Radiator Springs Racers each take photos.
Take note of your photo number displayed on your photo on the screens outside of these rides after you ride them and enter the number into the app to access your photo for downloading. Disney World in Florida requires you to have Lightning Lane Passes or Memory Maker purchased in order to access your photos from the rides at the park.
Are Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure theme parks as crowded as the theme parks at Disney World in Florida?
The crowd levels felt different at Disney in California in a good way. I was expecting every ride to have high wait times at Disneyland pretty much instantly as the park opened, but all of the wait times were pretty manageable, especially in the mornings. We did select the days to visit that were set to have lower crowd levels, but I was impressed on how relaxed and not crowded the mornings were at Disneyland. It was nice to be able to just walk on and ride rides like I remembered doing years ago in Disney World Florida. Crowd levels did pick up in the afternoon and again in the evening when the California Adventure park closed, but at that point we were focused on re-riding some of our favorite rides and watching some evening Disney entertainment, so the crowd didn’t feel frustrating. At Disney World in Florida, pretty much every ride instantly has a long wait time nowadays first thing in the morning making it more difficult to ride as many attractions efficiently. These days Disney World in Florida doesn’t seem to have low crowd level days.
How early do I need to arrive to enter Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure each day?
While it is best to be in line for the parks before they open so that you can experience as much as possible, I feel that entering the Disney parks in California even a little after opening doesn’t make as much of a difference in wait times as it can if you are late arriving at the Disney parks in Florida. In general and especially during the morning hours, riding rides with lower wait times at the Disney parks in California was doable, more relaxed, and flexible, whereas in Florida it is very important to get in line for a popular attraction as early as you can and to enter the park each day on time and with a plan on what to ride next in order to make the most of your visit.
Which rides at the Disney parks in California are the exact same as those at Disney World in Florida?
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Star Tours: The Adventure Continues, Dumbo’s Flight, and Mad Tea Party are the same. Jungle Cruise is the same ride, it is just shorter in Disneyland than the Jungle Cruise ride at Magic Kingdom in Florida. Galaxy’s Edge, Star Wars area felt very similar in Disneyland as it looks in Hollywood Studios in Florida. Toy Story Mania in Disney’s California Adventure is also the same as the ride in Hollywood Studios at Disney World in Florida.
Which rides at the Disney parks in California have the same name but are different from the rides in Disney World Florida?
Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Peter Pan’s Flight, Pirate’s of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Autopia, and It’s a Small World each have the same general theming as the rides in Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Florida, however there are many differences in the atmosphere and ride detailing that make them more unique and special in Disneyland in California. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ride in Disneyland has a single file, individual seat, four row ride boat as opposed to the double seat four row ride boat in Magic Kingdom in Florida. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Disneyland is also shorter than the ride in Magic Kingdom. Space Mountain has a double seat and two row ride vehicle in Disneyland as opposed to a single file, individual seat, and three row ride vehicle at Magic Kingdom in Florida. Space Mountain also felt much, much smoother in Disneyland than in Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Florida.
Overall Disneyland felt quaint and easily walkable. While, it is true, the Sleeping Beauty castle is much smaller in Disneyland than the Cinderella castle is at Florida’s Magic Kingdom, I love that you can walk through the Sleeping Beauty castle in Disneyland. I really enjoyed taking in all of the attention to detail at Disneyland. Disney World is also full of wonderful detailing, yet while at Disneyland, I felt more immersed in the theming of each area of the park. I think the fact that Disneyland is more compact really helps to create a more immersive experience for guests. Adventureland, Fantasyland, New Orleans Square, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Main Street, and Toontown at Disneyland each had their own unique charm that made me feel apart of each of them more than the Magic Kingdom theme park does in Florida. The areas at Disneyland didn’t feel too grand, they just felt realistic and that was nice. Cars Land at Disney’s California Adventure is also very impressive. The detailing of Galaxy’s Edge at both Disneyland and also in Hollywood Studios at Disney World in Florida are equally excellent in both locations with little differences. At Disneyland, the Mark Twain ferry ride and even the Disneyland Train ride around the park are also immersive rides that were fun and worthwhile experiences with unexpected detailing for being transportation rides.
